A post-graduate in Political Science from Rajendra College, Chhapra, he began his political career as an MLA (2000, 2005, 2010) and subsequently served as Bihar’s Minister of Art & Culture (2005–08) and Labour Resources (2010–13) . First elected to Lok Sabha in 2014, he secured re-election in 2019 and again in 2024 with a substantial margin . With around 54,049 votes, he narrowly defeated AAP’s Dinesh Mohaniya by a margin of 344 votes to become the MLA of Sangam Vihar
